United Boeing 777-300ER Polaris business class review: I'm spoiled forever

At the beginning of this year, I had the privilege of experiencing international United Polaris business class for the first time on United's Boeing 777-200ER. I just got off a 6-hour cross-country flight on Air Canada from Toronto to San Francisco. My parents contacted me in the middle of the flight to ask if I could go with them to China the following day. Since it was very last-minute, I didn't want to sit for 16 hours in economy, so I decided to splurge on the business class upgrade (my butt still hurt from sitting for 6 hours on the flight from Toronto).

The Cost

The original ticket in United Economy was $744.66. The upgrade to United Polaris 24 hours before departure was $1700. The total cost came out to be $2,444.66. I booked the flight a day in advance, so it seemed to be a fairly reasonable price for 16 hours in the sky.

The Flight

Check-in

United has a couple of Premier Access counters at the end of the SFO International terminal near the G gates. When we walked up, the person behind the desk was a little rude since we approached before they were ready. After retreating back to the (empty) queue, she waved us over and helped us check in.

My parents were traveling in Basic Economy but were also able to check in with me in the Premier Access lane. Aside from the initial attitude, the employee was helpful in suggesting my parents use my name to check in their bags since they would get priority handling. In addition, she introduced me to the United Polaris Lounge, but since both of my parents were with me, we opted to skip the lounge. The Polaris Lounge doesn't allow guests, while the United Club allows one guest.

Since I have TSA Pre-Check and CLEAR, I didn't look to see if there was a Premier Access security lane. However, I wouldn't be surprised if there is one.

Boarding

Boarding was done in groups, and Polaris passengers are in group 1. Since I was traveling with my parents, I opted to hang out with them until their group was called.

My parents ended up getting bulkhead seats together, which I'm happy they got!

The Seat

Although my boarding pass said "no window", there were two partial windows behind the "table" which provided a decent view outside.

The seat itself is really nice, with a fully lie-flat seat, a large IFE, storage areas for headphones, water, and other items. The headphones were "noise cancelling" but not great. The table has a power outlet. Finally, the lamp added a nice touch next to the window. Next to the IFE screen is a coat hook.

The seat also came with a large pillow from Saks Fifth Avenue and a plush blanket. There wasn't much space to place these items after sitting down, so I shoved them into the foot cubby in front of me.

There is also an amenity kit with toiletries, socks, face mist, and more. We also got to keep them, which I gifted to my parents.

On takeoff, they kept sliding onto my legs, which was mildly annoying.

Preflight Service

Shortly after sitting down, a flight attendant enthusiastically walked over and introduced herself to me. She then asked for my meal preference, and I opted for the center cut sirloin.

Shortly after, another flight attendant walked by and offered a preflight service of juice, water, or champagne. I opted for the champagne, which tasted refreshing. Being a little drunk before a flight is definitely a first for me!

Settling In

After a short taxi, we took off into the sky on our journey to Hong Kong. Settling into the seat, I took the opportunity to check out the IFE screen.

It's large and high-resolution and comes with a USB port. However, the USB is too far away to reach. The screen has your typical United IFE system, but it's starting to show its age. Interactions on the screen were extremely laggy, and it was hard to press many buttons. In addition, there is no Bluetooth connectivity.

However, for normal movie watching, it's perfectly fine.

Lunch

Lunch was served shortly after takeoff and started off with an appetizer. I choose the Prosciutto di Parma. I also got a glass of wine (which I forgot to take a picture of the wine menu).

The appetizer was tasty; however, the bread stole the show. The garlic on it was great. However, the salad tasted a little funny. Nothing that some salad dressing couldn't fix, though!

Flight attendants also walked through the cabin to gauge when everyone was finishing up their appetizer.

Shortly after I finished, lunch was served (center-cut sirloin). It was extremely tasty, and the charred broccolini was fantastic. Literally the best inflight meal I've ever had, 10/10!

While serving the entree, the flight attendant also refilled my wine. Shortly after finishing the entree, dessert was offered with the option of cheesecake or the signature ice cream sundae.

Of course, I opted for the ice cream sundae with all the toppings except nuts since I'm allergic. I have to say, the ice cream was my favorite part!

Overall, dining in Polaris was really nice! None of it felt rushed, and the attentive crew made the experience flow seamlessly.

Sleep

After lunch, our tables were cleared, and the cabin was dimmed for some rest. I got up to use the restroom, which was typical for any Boeing 777 bathroom. There were extras of the face mist and hand lotions from our amenity kits next to the sink.

After getting out, a flight attendant asked if there was anything they could do to make my flight better. I took the opportunity to ask for a mattress pad, which they happily retrieved from an overhead bin.

I highly encourage asking for it since it makes the seat more comfortable to sleep on!

Sleep was fine, but I was getting a little hot and started to sweat. Opening the air above didn't really help. However, it beats sleeping in economy. I would say it's as comfortable as sleeping on my $200 futon.

Breakfast

Around 2 hours before landing, breakfast was served. I opted for the poached shrimp congee, which I still dream of to this day.

Arrival

After arriving in the evening, I regrouped with my parents before we headed over to Hong Kong immigration.
